Random Thoughts Round Up
I wrote a post about not being on social media but I don’t really care about social media. I wrote another piece about struggling with time management but it doesn’t really feel that important either. Instead, I bring to you some thoughts that may resonate or may also be fairly unimportant:
I have stopped believing that any one way is the right way. Veganism, unschooling, homesteading… whatever. They may be part of your path or they may not. Holding onto hard truths for all people in all spaces and times seems incredibly shortsighted and irresponsible.
I’m fairly certain that consumerism is the root of all our modern evils. The argument of who is allowed to consume what for what reasons feel largely besides the point: if we deny the reality that the world is suffering for our excess, we condemn everyone - human and more-than-human. I’m working on developing the mindset that consuming in excess is personally damaging to try and rewrite the cultural narrative that I am a sum of my possessions.
The illusion of individual control is such a trip. The idea that our actions are the determination of unique outcomes becomes more ridiculous the more years I spend on this planet. The sheer volume of causes and effects in any one instance is unfathomable.
The call outdoors is strong these last days of winter. We still have snow on the ground and I can’t wait for the sap to start flowing so I’ve got an excuse to sit in front of a campfire for 3 days straight. If you’re growing food this year, please share all your juicy plans.
In on episode of Avatar the Last Airbender, Aang meets with Guru Patik who teaches him to open his chakras so he can control the avatar state. In the final stage of this journey, he is asked to let go of attachment, and Aang gets confused because an earlier part of his journey asks him to embrace what he loves. He confuses the difference between being in love and being attached to that which he loves, and I think that conceptually, this is one of the hardest lessons that I’ve learned in my life. Also, Avatar is one of the best animated series in existence and if you haven’t watched it, you definitely should make the time to do so.
I’ve made the firm commitment to offering rugs on my website for pay-what-you-want. I’ll continue listing them there throughout the year and probably do a market in the winter with whatever is left over. I know I said less consumerism up there, but you’re also welcome to consider these more of a gift and a way to support a more circular economy.
